This by far is Redway Furniture’s most versatile piece of furniture.  It is also one of our most beautiful pieces as well. The Shaker Step was inspired by a similar step built at Hancock Shaker Village in Massachusetts during the 19th Century. We made our’s lower, and increased the size of the dovetails.

The step is completely constructed of solid American Black Cherry and joined using hand-cut dovetails.  These dovetails were completely cut by hand using only a Japanese Dozuki Saw and Japanese Chisels by Jason Redway.  The dovetail joint is the strongest method of joining wood at right angles that has ever been invented.

We used to do a fine arts and crafts show on Nantucket Island, and our Shaker Step was always one of the most popular pieces we sold.  We can still remember attending the “Preview Party” on the evening before the show started, and witnessing party attendees sprinting to our booth with a Nantucket Lightship basket clenched in one hand and a glass of white wine in the other to claim one of our beautiful steps.  We only made about 8 or 10 per show.

Shaker Step #179

Cherry is one of America’s most premier hardwoods, and was used to build some of the finest pieces built in America.  Redway Furniture uses only the best cherry available and we have finished this piece with 5 coats of hand-rubbed tung oil for a silky-smooth satin finish. This natural finish will slowly darken and built a beautiful patina within only a few weeks. It may look light now, but it will darken fairly quickly.

Use it in any room in your house, but little children like to drag it around the kitchen allowing them to gain access to high cabinets. The step is light enough to be highly portable, so you can carry it from room to room.  Once you have owned one of these steps, you will wonder how you ever got along without it. Before my son Jason made this step, he was looking at one I made in our kitchen.  The step was well used with dings and dents all over it. We turned it over and the date on the bottom read November 1994. Thats over 20 years ago.  I told my son he was responsible for many of those little dents. Even with all its wear-and-tear and after all these years, the step was a strong as the day it was made.

The contrast of end grain and the patina of cherry make this a really beautiful piece of furniture.

The Shaker Step is signed numbered, dated and branded with our hallmark.

This Shaker Step was made by Jason Redway, who is the youngest son of James Redway. He continues the Redway tradition of great design, craftsmanship and attention to detail.

The finished step all glued up and ready to sand. No nails, no screws - only hand-cut dovetails that will last for years to come.

The back support is also dovetailed into the frame.

These steps are very unique, extremely durable and as far as I know, you can’t buy them anywhere but from Redway Furniture or furniture makers like us.
