Five Board Bench #43

A classic New England bench handmade by James Redway Furniture Makers out of solid American Black Cherry. This design was taken from a measured drawing of an 18th Century New England footstool, which was intended to be place in front of a chair so that a weary Settler could rest his or her feet on after a hard day’s work. I scaled the design up to make this beautiful bench.

Its a great height. Use it anywhere in your home where you could use a bench; in front of a fireplace, in the bedroom, as a small coffee table in a cozy apartment, or in your entryway as a place to remove your boots after a day of dealing with the New England Winter.

Made to last for generations.  Quality furniture never goes out of style.

This bench is nice and heavy.  Its built with 7/8” thick solid cherry.  The top is made from two planks from the same board.  There is quite a bit of figure in the top grain which is always a pleasant surprise, because it is not all that common in cherry.

If you Google “Five Board Bench” (Images) you are bombarded with a multiple of clunky, poorly designed benches. They may be practical, but they certainly lack the design care and beauty that the early American Settlers put into their work. Redway Furniture extends the same care into our work as well.
